Q & A
How different between Western and Oriental medicine?
Western Medicine is based on natural science and focuses on relieving symptoms caused by external factors (Physical approach), trying to alleviate symptoms caused by diseases. On the other side, Oriental Medicine is based on philosophy and focuses on strengthening autoimmune power by harmony with external factors (Metaphysical approach), so has many mysterious sides because it begins by acknowledging the wonders of humanity, however, the value of Oriental Medicine is being scientifically proven.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing practices in the world. It has been practiced in Asian countries for over 2500 years. It shows efficacy for a wide range of conditions. Acupuncture involves inserting very fine metallic needles with various techniques, promotes blood circulation, and helps the body to be balanced. Acupuncture has relatively fewer complications compared to other practices.
What is Qi?
Qi is a very metaphysical concept in Oriental Medicine theory but realistic at the same time. Korean people say “Qi is blocked” when it’s amazing and says “Qi died” when it’s depressed. And say “The distribution of Qi is good” when it feels good. Qi is the world we live in together and the air we are breathing right now at this moment, and the energy we need for life.Oriental Medicine values the existence and movement of Qi in Physiology and Pathology with Diagnosis and Treatment, so try to move and reinforce or excrete Qi during treatment.
What is Yin and Yang?
Yin and Yang is an Oriental medical theory of relativity regarding physiology, pathology, diagnosis, and treatment of the human body. Everything is relative as Physicist Einstein said, and Oriental Medicine uses this relativity for treatment. The ultimate goal of Oriental Medicine is the balance with harmony of Yin and Yang in the human body.
What is Five elements?
Ancient people divided everything (the human body and the world) into five categories. Five elements are wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. These five elements are related to the human body with internal organs and the elements make up the world. These five elements have a close relationship with each other, and Oriental Medicine uses this relationship for treatment. These Five elements save each other but sometimes hurt each other. The ultimate goal of Oriental Medicine is the balance of Yin Yang and harmony of Five elements in the human body.
What is Meridian and Acupoints?
Meridian is the way the energy of the human body is flowing. Western medicine proved human body has 2 circulatory systems, which are the vascular system and the lymphatic system. Oriental Medicine says the human body has another circulatory system, that is Meridian. The meridian is the way Qi is flowing and the basis of Oriental Medicine. A lot of acupoints are on the meridians so it can be the route of diagnosis and treatment.
What is Constitution Oriental Medicine says?
Oriental Medicine values the constitution of the patient during treatment. Western Medicine has a clear standard of diagnosing and choosing the best treatment to relieve symptoms, but Oriental Medicine says the treatment needs to be applied after checking the constitution of the patient in addition to symptoms. Oriental Medicine tries to understand the constitution of patients through various diagnostic methods before starting treatment. For example, find out the constitution of the patient is hot or cold, and full or empty with checking the location of the disease. So patients with the same disease receive different treatments depending on the constitution.
How Oriental Medicine can treat diseases?
The acupoints are spots that reflect the disease and are used for treatment. A lot of modern research is proving physiological changes resulting from Oriental Medicine treatment, for example, Acupuncture therapy can change the potential of the diseased area and induce the secretion of hormones involved in the treatment of diseases. Most therapeutic principles of Oriental Medicine have not been scientifically proven yet, but a lot of patients are getting help from Oriental Medicine treatment and it has been a very long time. Oriental Medicine can help a lot of patients when Western Medicine treatment is no longer effective.
Does insurance cover Acupuncture?
We accept all insurances as an in-net or out-of-network provider, but not all plans cover Acupuncture treatment. If we try to meet the requirements of every insurance company, sometimes cannot use a lot of treatment skills because insurance companies have various restrictions about the treatment process in Oriental Medicine unlike Western Medicine. We want many patients to experience true Traditional Oriental Medicine as much as possible. However, contact for a consultation anytime. We will be happy to verify your coverage and will do our best to help you get the most benefits of insurance.
Is Acupuncture safe?
Our acupuncture service uses single-use disposable needles sealed by the manufacturer in sterile conditions. The needles are open just prior to use by the acupuncture practitioner. Because of this, the risk of infection is extremely low. This is the common hygienic practice that is widely used in developed countries for needles in Western Medicine as well.
Does it hurt?
Most of our patients fall asleep after the gentle insertion of hair-thin, sterile needles into the shallow surface of the body. People often associate all needles with painful Western Medical experiences such as injections or blood draws. The good news is that our acupuncture treatment isn’t like that at all!
What can I expect during my first visit?
We will conduct a comprehensive evaluation which will be used to establish a diagnosis. This may include an evaluation process where we ask about your health history, check your vitals/pulse, perform a tongue diagnosis, etc. We will then discuss with you our plan of treatment, answer your questions and address any concerns you may have, after which you will receive appropriate treatment.
How long will my session last?
Our treatments generally last for an hour but it may depend on the patient’s individual needs. Bear in mind that most of the time you will be in a fully relaxed state or falling asleep to peaceful music.
How many Acupuncture treatments will I need and for how long to see results?
Results typically present themselves between 3 and 5 sessions, 1 or 2 times a week, but every case is different. We are your best guide to informing you of the most realistic expectations that will become apparent in your particular case.
